Southwest Wastewater Treatment Plant in St Petersburg won EU environmental award

YIT Corporation Ltd. and the Southwest Wastewater Treatment Plant construction project won the environment competition organized by the European Commission. The plant has been operational since September 2005. It has reduced the amount of untreated sewage entering the Gulf of Finland from St Petersburg by about a third.

construction project won the EU European Business Awards for the Environment competition.
European Commission organizes the competition every other year to honour outstanding corporate contributions to sustainable development. The international category award is for an international project that contributes to environmental protection, economic and social development of any developing or transition country.
Southwest Wastewater Treatment Plant was recognized for contributing significantly to reducing pollution in the Baltic Sea. The jury also noted that the plant provided employment and on-the-job-training for the first Public Private Partnership –project in Russia.
The plant has been operational from September 2005. It treats wastewater from about 700000 city residents. It has reduced the amount of untreated sewage entering the Gulf of Finland from St Petersburg by about a third.

YIT shared the price with the Dutch company iD-L inspired innovations, which produces bags and fashion products made of recycled plastic bags and employs many poor Delhi slum residents.
