St Petersburg Southwest Wastewater Treatment Plant inaugurated

The St Petersburg Southwest Wastewater Treatment Plant is an important project for Finnfund because of its major environmental effects. The plant was inaugurated on 22 September 2005.
St Petersburg Southwest Wastewater Treatment Plant was inaugurated on 22 September 2005. The President of Finland, Ms Tarja Halonen, Russian President Vladimir Putin and the Swedish Prime Minister Göran Persson participated the opening ceremony.
The construction of the new treatment plant has been Finland´s largest single regional environmental co-operation project. The project has major environmental effects. The plant is able to treat wastewater from about 700 000 city residents. It will reduce the amount of untreated sewage entering the Gulf of Finland from St Petersburg by about a third.
The total cost of the project is about 200 million euros, out of which the wastewater treatment plant contract is 128 million euros. The project has been financed with grants, international loans, capital investments and local financing. The main lenders are the Nordic Investment Bank NIB, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development EBRD, the European Investment Bank EIB and also Finnfund and Swedfund. Finnish grant for the project was 10 million euros. Also Sweden, Northern Dimension Environmental Partnership initiative and the EU Commission participated with a grant.
The wastewater treatment plant has been constructed by SWTP Construction Oy, which is a Finnish project company formed by a consortium of contractors including YIT, Skanska and NCC International.
The wastewater treatment plant is an important project for Finnfund because of its major environmental effects. “The development process was eventful. Although there were many parties involved, we managed to reach the common goal through joint efforts. I hope that future projects can benefit from the experience. At this point we shall congratulate everybody involved in the construction work for a job well done”, said Ms Paula Sundberg, Finnfund’s investment manager.
